About

Madison Brady is an interdisciplinary artist working across theatre, film, music, and digital media. Her work explores the nature of sound and how it can be woven into stories for both the stage and the screen. Drawing on extensive training in classical orchestral performance, as well as experience in pit orchestras and film editing, her practice is informed by a range of artistic disciplines. Brady has designed sound for productions ranging from large-scale theatre and intimate black-box performances to short films and live events. She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Sound Design at the California Institute of the Arts after completing her undergraduate studies in the Midwest.

Brady's path into sound design started when she was 10 years old. Initially picking up the cello, this instrument taught her to think in resonance, tension, and harmony long before she ever sat behind a mixing board. The cello not only became her passion, but acted as a passageway to opening up her mind to what more there could be to sound. At 12 years old, Brady learned the French horn, and soon after the mellophone and the trumpet; which only enhanced her knowledge of music and sound as a whole. After years performing in orchestral and chamber settings in groups like the Quad City Youth Symphony and the University of Iowa Symphony, Brady found herself drawn to the question of how sound shapes the way an audience feels, both in comfort and in fear, and uses that to influence her designs.

Brady graduated from the University of Iowa in 2025 with a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance and a Minor in Cinema. While pursuing her love for music, she also focused on expanding her artistic repertoire as well; learning basic filmmaking and post-production in cinema and studying sound in a theatre environment by playing in and managing pit orchestras for various musicals. In addition, Brady spent her later undergraduate years studying audio engineering; building expertise in microphone placement, audio routing, console operation, and system design.

Brady's theatre work spans immersive productions, new play development, traditional musical theatre, and everything in between. She focuses on what each story wants to convey, and how to best make each feeling come across to the audience. Whether she's creating atmospheric environments, designing bold sound effects, or using live musicians, Brady approaches each production with the belief that sound should act as a connecting source between the audience and the world that is unveiling in front of them.

In film and post-production, Brady specializes in building worlds from the inside out, beginning with foundational research into the unique characteristics of each project. She uses that research to craft accurate, detailed, and realistic ambiances and sound effects that remain authentic to the action unfolding on screen. Brady's work in post-production is defined by meticulous attention to detail, ensuring every sound effect occurs precisely when it should and that no discrepancies go unnoticed. Her foley work is driven by a curiosity about the acoustic properties of everyday objects and environments, recording everything from the resonant clash of swords to the assertive call of a blue jay.

When it comes to mixing music, Brady looks back to her classical upbringing to precisely balance frequencies and highlight voices that are most important in certain moments. Drawing on years of ensemble performance, she tackles each mix with a musician's ear; shaping dynamics and texture to preserve both the emotional intent and the integrity of the mix.
